Cosmetic surgery: Finding happiness where it cannot be found.

Cosmetic surgery involves the alteration of a person’s natural look from a less desirable level to a desirable one.   There are many different types of cosmetic surgery including breast augmentation (enlargement or enhancement of the breast), facial rejuvenation (making the face look younger), eyelid surgery, abdominoplasty (removing skin and fat from under the abdomen), rhinoplasty (nose job) and liposuction (removal of unwanted fat using surgical vacuum).  While people who may have sustained damage to their physical body through one form of accident or another may need cosmetic surgery, the vast majority of many people who opt for the procedure appear to do so for personal rather than for accidental reasons.

Some of these people may opt for cosmetic surgery because they have feeling of depression or low self esteem.  They believe that cosmetic surgery can help them overcome these problems.  There is research to support that it actually works for some of these people but not for others.

Societal attitude towards people who are considered to be less attractive is also partly responsible for the desire for cosmetic surgery.  Society likes to project the image of people particularly women who appear to be more attractive in most of the public domains such as on television and print media than people who are not.    Those who are less attractive try to make up for this rejection by undergoing cosmetic surgery.   Unfortunately they do this at a very high cost both financially and heath wise to themselves.

The cost of cosmetic surgery is high and can range from £10,000.00 to £35,000.00.  While wealthy people can easily afford this cost, the average people on the street cannot afford it easily.  They will use up all their savings or borrow some money from the bank to foot the procedure.  At the end of the procedure they will run into hefty debt that they will struggle for many years to settle.

It is also not guaranteed that cosmetic surgery can enhance a person’s physical look for better.  People undergo cosmetic surgery with the expectation that the procedure will enhance their look and physical attractiveness.  However, evidence from those who have undergone the procedure shows that this expectation is far from reality.  Some people became disfigured after the procedure, while others have had some of the instruments or materials used during the operation left in their body, resulting in a lot of pain and other health complications.  People who cannot cope with this aftermath of cosmetic surgery tend to commit suicide.

In summary, there can be very good reasons for cosmetic surgery.  Cosmetic surgery may be inevitable for some people who may have sustained bodily damage to enhance their physical appearance.  It may also be necessary to improve the psychological state of some people suffering depression or low self esteem.  However, it may not be necessary for many people who view the procedure as a personal choice.  This is because the cost of cosmetic surgery is high and the procedure is not guaranteed to result in success.
