The birth of the British royal baby boy: How much attention does he deserve from the public?

Prior to the birth of the baby boy into the British royal family yesterday, the world media had acted as if there were no other newsworthy items to report to their audiences. They had camped around the hospital, Queen Mary's Hospital, where the future king was born for weeks before the birth. Following the birth, this media went viral. Important news items were suspended to broadcast the good news. Some observers, however, are not happy that a lot of time and resources had been devoted by the media to the stories of the birth of the future king and question whether the royal baby deserves the attention of people outside of the royal family.

The media had every reason to show great interest in the newly born royal baby boy even before he was born because they have a great stake in the birth. Both viewers of televisions and readers of newspapers or magazines like sensational stories. The media had camped around the hospital where the baby boy was delivered to sensationalize the birth both to satisfy these hungry audiences and make high margins. Had they nothing at stake, the world media would treat the birth of the future king like ordinary birth within the community which normally goes unreported.

While the media may be accused of showing great interest in the birth of the royal baby boy due to the fact that the media was profiteering from the stories, the same cannot be said of the royal family. Like every family who has got a new born baby, the royal family is likely to be over-joyous for the birth of the baby boy yesterday. Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, Philip, for example, will be happy for having a great grandchild, Prince Charles will be happy for having a grandchild while William and Kate will be ecstatic for becoming parents for the first time in their lives. Thus, the new born baby deserves all the attention it can get from these family members.

Monarchists (people who support the monarch as head of state)will also argue that the newly born royal baby does not just deserve the attention of his royal family but also the attention of every person living in Britain and even beyond. They will contend that the baby is the future head of government in several countries including United Kingdom, Canada, Australia,New Zealand, Jamaica, St Lucia and the Bahamas, and head of the commonwealth countries. From this point, it is reasonable for people not connected to the royal family to pay great attention to the birth of the future king who may influence their lives for better or worse.

The monarchists will also contend that the newly born baby boy deserves the attention of all and sundry because he will be an invaluable asset to the United Kingdom. According to them, millions of tourists around the world visit the United Kingdom annually to see important things relating to the monarchy such as the Buckingham palace, and this often brings millions of pounds to the treasury. These tourists will continue to visit the UK and bring revenue to the kingdom even when the newly born baby is enthroned in the future.

Republicans (people who favour elected head of state as opposed to monarch), however, will disagree that the newly born royal baby deserves the attention of people outside of the royal family because he is the future head of government for countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada, and head of Commonwealth of Nations. While the republicans will not disagree with this fact that the baby might be the future king, they will contend that the role of this future king is only ceremonial. He will neither participate in the law making process nor veto any legislation enacted by the parliament in any of the countries that he is the head using such procedure. For the republicans, therefore, it is not desirable for people not relating to the royal family to celebrate the birth of this future king who may not have any direct influence on them.

Republicans will also disagree with the monarchists that the newly born baby boy should be given all the attention in the world because he will be an invaluable asset to the UK. Instead of considering the future king as a potential asset to the UK, the republicans will consider the future king to be a liability to the nation. According to the republicans, United Kingdom will spend far more on the future king than it can benefit from him. The money that will be spent on protecting and providing for this future king, for example, will outweigh the revenue that might accrue from monarchy-related tourisms.

So far, you have seen why the birth of the royal baby boy should or should not be given great attention by people outside of the royal family. How is the birth being reported in your country? Do you find the reporting annoying? What is your view on this issue? I will be happy to read from you.
