Why List your Business in A Business Directory?

Many people who have a business website can testify how frustrating it can be to list a business in a business directory. It can take up to half an hour to fill in all the mandatory sections required by some business directories. This does not guarantee that the business being listed will be visible to web users. In view of these many people tend to conclude that listing a business in business directories is a waste of time.

For critics of business directories, having a very good website with good contents well linked is all a business needs to be ranked high by search engines. There is no doubt that these factors can play a large role in website ranking but stating that they are just the only ingredients for good site ranking is missing the point.

As well as good website contents and links search engines also consider other factors when trying to rank a site. These include the relevance of the website contents to the general audience and the age of the website. The question to ask regarding the relevance of the website content to the wider audience is whether a user who visits a phone website, for example, can find other items unrelated to phones while visiting the site. If the answer is no that means the content on the phone website is only relevant to people in need of phone or its accessories. In other words, a person looking for computer accessories cannot find any item within the phone website useful.

In contrast, if a person can find other items such as computer accessories in a phone shop while searching for a phone or its accessories, it means the store has a wider audience relevance. The assumption is that consumers tend to buy items on display even though they have not planned for such items beforehand providing they can find the items while searching for the items they want. Similarly search engines consider a website with a “wider audience relevance” more important than a website without such quality. They rank these sites more highly than those without a wider audience appeal. Unless you are running a mega store such as those owned by Yahoo, EBay, Google and Amazon, your website appeal to a wider audience is limited.

You can overcome this problem by listing your business in business directories. Since many different kinds of businesses tend to connect to website directories your business will get better links to unrelated businesses associated with these directories. By so doing you are telling search engines that your website business is appealing to a larger consumer audience. Forget about the time you will spend listing your business in as many business directories as possible, in the end you are going to reap the reward. A word of caution, do not make the mistake of listing your business in only specialised directories – such as bed and breakfast only directories. You should also list your business in general directories.
