Memory: Is Forgetting Good For Us?

Memory and forgetfulness may be good for us in a number of ways.  However, many people may find it hard to accept this fact.  This is because our ability to remember information is one of the features that make us complete humans.  We will get loss each time we go out, for example, if we cannot remember our route. We cannot make permanent friends if we cannot remember meeting or talking to the friends before.  Even we cannot do mundane things at home such as cooking, eating, washing, and bathing if we cannot remember information about these activities.

People suffering from memory problems such as Dementia or Alzheimer require around the clock care. They cannot do anything themselves.   They depend on other people for almost everything including cooking, washing, and other personal care.

This is why many of us tend to engage in different kinds of behavior to keep our memory intact.  Some of us, for example, exercise regularly as this is linked to good memory.  Some especially students tend to take memory pills to remember information.  Others may consume fruit and vegetables to enhance their memory.  It appears from these that no person will try and convince us that the tendency to forget is good for us.

Yet the ability to forget is good for us.  Imagine if we are to remember continually every single event that happens in our life.  This may range from the dispute we have with our boyfriend or girlfriend to comments made by colleagues at work to memories of loved ones who had passed away.  Surely life will be unbearable for us if we are to remember all of this information.

Just as the ability to remember information is part of what makes us complete humans, the tendency to forget information  makes us complete humans.  What ever you do to maintain a sharp memory, do not forget that your life as a normal human being may not be complete if you cannot forget certain information.
